Scholars are invited to apply for the Abba P. Schwartz Research Fellowship. The fellowship is administered by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation from funds provided by the family, friends, and colleagues of Abba Schwartz. Mr. Schwartz served in the Kennedy Administration as Assistant Secretary of State for Security and Consular Affairs.
The Schwartz Fellowship carries a stipend of up to $3,100. It is intended to support a scholar in the production of a substantial work in the areas of immigration, naturalization, or refugee policy, subjects of great personal and professional interest to Mr. Schwartz. The successful candidate will develop at least a portion of his or her original research using archival materials from the Kennedy Library.
The postmark deadline for applications is August 15. Awards will be announced on October 20. Applications may be submitted via mail or email (see contact information below). Applications received after the deadline will be considered for the next fellowship cycle.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the Kennedy Library (see below) for information about its collections and holdings before applying.
To apply, please submit the following documentation: 1) an application form (pdf) accompanied by a brief proposal (three to four pages) in the form of a letter describing the planned research, its significance, the intended audience, and expected outcome; 2) two letters of recommendation from academic or other appropriate references; 3) a sample of your writing (approx. ten pages); 4) a project budget; and 5) a vita.
In your application, please indicate the collections you plan to use at the Kennedy Library and at other institutions. In addition, describe how the funds will be applied, other fellowships or grants that will support the project, and whether matching funds are available to you at your home institution or elsewhere. (Note: Preference is given to projects not supported by large grants from other institutions.) Finally, describe your qualifications and similar research projects that you have undertaken.
The estimated per diem cost of accommodations, meals, and incidentals for Boston is $225.
