BOSTON, MA – The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation today announced that Robert Epstein, Co-Chairman of Horizon Beverage Group, will chair the Foundation’s 26th Annual May Dinner on Sunday, May 4, 2014. The May Dinner is the Foundation’s annual black-tie gala that celebrates President Kennedy’s enduring legacy.
The annual dinner provides crucial financial support to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, the nation’s official memorial to President John F. Kennedy which was envisioned by Jacqueline Kennedy as “a vital center of education and exchange and thought, which will grow and change with the times.”
“It will be,” she wrote, “not only a memorial to President Kennedy but a living center of study of the times in which he lived, which will inspire the ideals of democracy and freedom in young people all over the world.”
“I’m proud to have Bob at the helm of our 2014 dinner,” said Kenneth R. Feinberg, Chairman of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and Administrator of the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund and One Fund Boston. “Bob is a leader in business and in his community, and continues a great tradition of leadership for the May Dinner. Fundraising is not an easy job, but Bob is a tough man to say no to, and I’m confident he will help the Foundation reach our $2 million goal.”
“JFK’s words and ideals are a timeless source of inspiration,” said Epstein. “It is my hope that Americans will continue to ask what they can do for our country as they did during the Kennedy Presidency. I am honored to lead this effort, and to contribute to the Library’s mission of sharing President Kennedy’s legacy with new generations.”
A highlight of the 2014 May Dinner will be welcoming and honoring the 2014 Profile in Courage Award® honoree. Recent honorees include former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords who received the award in 2013; and the three former Iowa Supreme Court Justices who ruled in favor of marriage equality for same sex couples and were later ousted by voters in a pro forma retention election, who received the award in 2012.
The Annual May Dinner provides unrestricted funds to help underwrite the JFK Library’s educational programming, which serves 25,000 students a year –free of charge—through guided museum visits, multi-school programs, youth participation in the Kennedy Library Forum series, as well as arts & cultural programming.
Recent event co-chairs include Staples CEO Ronald L. Sargent; former Fidelity executive Peter Lynch; New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft; Raytheon CEO William H. Swanson; and Boston attorney Gerard Doherty.
Robert Epstein is Co-Chairman of Horizon Beverage Group, the largest distributor of spirits, beer, and wine in New England that employs over 800 people in five states. He is active in numerous civic and charitable endeavors, including the University of Massachusetts, where he is co-chairing the $300 million UMASS Rising Campaign, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he supports the Epstein Distinguished Chair for Rheumatology position.
