BOSTON - Ten large panels of the United in Memory: 9/11 Victims Memorial Quilt will be exhibited in Massachusetts for the first time at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum from September 11 through 30, 2002. Admission to view the hand-sewn quilt panels honoring the victims of 9/11 is free.

The 9/11 Memorial Quilt is a global volunteer undertaking to honor the victims of September 11th. Inspired by the AIDS Quilt, the 9/11 Memorial Quilt, when completed, will include over 3,000 squares with each victim’s name and photographs or other items that reveal his or her uniqueness.

Each panel measures 10½ feet by 10½ feet and contains 25 hand-sewn squares representing one of the victims of 9/11.

The ten panels displayed at the Kennedy Library will feature quilt squares honoring 250 victims, including Karleton D.B. Fyfe of Brookline, who was aboard American Airlines Flight 11.

Visitors to the Kennedy Library will be able to walk around the ten panels of the 9/11 Memorial Quilt or view it from vantage points that overlook the Library’s glass Pavilion. Famed architect I.M. Pei, who designed the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum, created the Pavilion to be a place for quiet reflection.

On September 11, 2002, admission to the Museum at the John F. Kennedy Library will be free and Museum hours will be extended from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.  All other days, the Museum is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $8; for seniors and students, $6; for those ages 13-17, $4; for children, ages 12 and under, free. Viewing of the quilt panels in the Pavilion is free.

The John F. Kennedy Library and Museum, Columbia Point, is located next to the UMass/Boston campus. Parking is free. Free shuttle service from the JFK stop on the T’s red line. Fully handicapped accessible. For more information, call (617) 514-1678 or access www.jfklibrary.org on the Internet.
