Replica of Freedom Bell

1961

Silver

5 x 6 3/4 inches

The Freedom Bell, a symbol of American support for Berlin and German-American friendship, is decorated with five human torch bearers with arms out stretched, holding a torch in their left hands and grasping the adjacent torch with their right hands, with an inscription below:  "That this world under god shall have a new birth of Freedom."  This is a replica of the larger Freedom Bell that was given to Berlin by the United States on October 24, 1950, which hung in the tower of Schoneberg Townhall.  The quote on the bell is the last line from the Declaration of Freedom , which was signed by 16 million Americans to promote democracy in Germany.  The replica was presented to President John F. Kennedy by West Berlin Mayor Willy Brandt at the White House in 1961.
