Silver urn with a wide bowl mounted on a pedestal base surrounded by three scrolled motifs. The bowl has a lid with a stepped finial design. The entire piece is profusely ornamented in silver repoussé technique.
This tureen was presented to President Kennedy by Prince Norodom Sihanouk, King of Cambodia (1941-55, 1993-2004) on September 25, 1961. The elaborate silverwork suggests the rich architectural carvings on the pediments of Banteay Srei, the classic Khmer temple of the tenth century.
