Designer: Oleg Cassini (American, b. France 1913-2006)
Date Made: 1962
Medium: Silk chiffon, porcelain beads, rhinestones
Worn by Mrs. John F. Kennedy to the opening of the Mona Lisa exhibit at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC on January 8, 1963. Also worn at the White House state dinner honoring President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan of India, June 3, 1963. This sari inspired evening dress is delicately beaded with porcelain and rhinestones. Jacqueline Kennedy had noticed a photograph of Audrey Hepburn wearing the original yellow version of the dress in the May 11, 1962 issue of Life magazine. She supplied Cassini with a sketch from which he created this version after a spring-summer 1962 model number 3786 by Hubert de Givenchy.
