Detailed descriptions of individual series are listed below:

• Manuscripts
  Manuscripts are arranged in two alphabetical series: Book Manuscripts (1-222a) and Story Fragments (222b-859). Each manuscript is given an item identification number. This number is used to identify the item for retrieval and for citation. An item may be only one page or as long as a complete novel draft. Book Manuscripts includes all manuscript materials (drafts, notes, typescripts, galleys) for the published books. Both novels and collections of short stories are included. Story Fragments includes manuscripts, notes, and typescripts for individual short stories, newspaper and magazine articles, poems, speeches, statements, and fragments.
  

• Outgoing Correspondence
  The outgoing correspondence is arranged chronologically. If the year is known but not the month or day, the letter is filed at the beginning of the year. If the month and year are known but not the day, the letter is filed at the beginning of the month. If the date cannot be established at all it is placed at the very end of the group with all other undated material. If more than one letter bears the same date, the letters are filed alphabetically by addressee's name.
  

• Incoming Correspondence
  Incoming correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the name of the person writing or sending the item of correspondence. All items within a correspondent's file are arranged chronologically. Letters for which the correspondent is unidentified are filed at the end of the alphabetical series.  File entries include names of organizations, such as publishing companies, literary agencies, or fundraising groups, especially when the individual who signed the letter did not figure prominently in Hemingway's life.
  

• Photographs
  Over 10,000 photographs are organized into groups according to centers of activity at various periods of Hemingway's life. This means that certain years are included in more than one group. It also means that photographs of Hemingway in New York are to be found in the section titled "Cuba Years, 1939-1960," because Hemingway traveled to New York when he was living at the Finca Vigia in Cuba.  For assistance with photographs, please contact the audiovisual department at (617) 514-1622.
  

• Newspaper Clippings
  Newspaper Clippings are found in correspondence and in scrapbooks. Clippings which appeared loose throughout the collection have been organized and arranged into several boxes. The catalog lists clippings chronologically and gives the location(s) of each. When bibliographic information was not evident from the clipping itself, an effort was made to determine it only for clippings authored by Ernest Hemingway.
  

• Other Materials
  Other materials includes everything that does not fall into one of the foregoing groups: manuscripts, correspondence, newspaper clippings or photographs. The materials are arranged by form of document or form of object, or by subject and are filed alphabetically.
