Arrangement: alphabetical by state.

Material collected before the Democratic National Convention, 7/11/60. Arranged by state and including the Canal Zone, District of Columbia, foreign countries, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The papers within folders have been arranged either chronologically or alphabetically depending on the contents. Mainly information on the political background of each state, as well as correspondence to and from delegates and supporters. The majority of papers are filed under a "Political" heading according to the last name of the person involved; and are correspondence on campaign issues. Also files on campaign trips conducted by Edward M. Kennedy or by John F. Kennedy himself. There is Marjorie Lawson NAACP material in the District of Columbia file. All of the "Applications" are closed.

Series 13.2. Post Convention to Election Files, 1960.
Boxes 976-988, 13 boxes

Arrangement: alphabetical by state.

Material collected after the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles which ended 7/15/60, and before the presidential election held 11/8/60. Except for the first four folders, which contain nationally distributed robotype letters and a chronological file of thank you letters, the material is arranged alphabetically by state.  Mostly congratulations, endorsements, campaign advice, and offers of assistance. Very little if any material on campaign strategy. The papers are arranged for the most part into two categories for each state, "Organizational" and "Political." The papers within the folders are arranged either chronologically or alphabetically, depending upon contents.

Series 14.5. Religious Issue Files of James Wine, 1960.
Boxes 1002-1022, 21 boxes
Arrangement: by type of material.

James Wine was Kennedy's special assistant to handle the religious question during the 1960 campaign. Prior to taking this position, he was associate general secretary of the National Council of Churches. These files are arranged into three sections. The first contains the correspondence on the religious issue which was received by Kennedy's campaign headquarters and was answered primarily by Wine or by J. Arthur Lazell, who was in charge of Community Relations. The letters of this section are both highly articulate expressions by reputable religious and lay figures and also incoherent, irate, and unanswerable attacks by religious fanatics. The second group of files are alphabetical subject files. Following is a collection of religious literature, both pro- and anti- Catholic. A cross-referenced listing of some of these materials, prepared by the Fair Campaign Practices Committee, can be found in the committee's folder in box 1015.

Additions

Addition of June 2005 (Acc. 2005-187)
About 3,600 items (2 linear feet, 10 linear inches).

This addition to the John F. Kennedy Pre-Presidential Papers consists of items that were recovered by the National Archives and Records Administration, on behalf of the Kennedy Presidential Library, from the estate of Robert L. White. White obtained the material from Evelyn Lincoln, President Kennedy’s secretary, who improperly removed and then sold or gave away the material. Had they not been separated by Lincoln, materials in this addition would have been placed in the John F. Kennedy Pre-Presidential Papers (see full addition).

Within the Subcollection 4, the documents should originally have been filed in Series 13.1. Pre-Convention Political Files, Series 13.2. Post-Convention Political Files, Series 14.4. Religious Issue File, Series 15.1. Speeches, Statements, and Sections, Series 15.3. Political Pamphlets and Issuances of the Democratic National Committee, and Series 15.10. Campaign Literature.  This addition also includes eleven folders of 1960 Democratic National Convention material that makes up Series 13.4., a new subseries within the 1960 Campaign Subcollection. Four folders of additional material from the 1960 Convention can be found in the President’s Office Files (POF) in the series entitled “Special Events through the Years.”

In cases where the intended file location was typed or handwritten on the documents, those documents were placed in folders bearing titles that matched the file location indicated. Documents that were not marked in this way were organized as closely as possible to the original filing system, according to the processing archivist’s judgment.  In the few cases when an appropriate file location was too difficult to determine, documents were placed in folders entitled “Miscellaneous.” The arrangement in which the material arrived did not appear to be meaningful, as the folder titles did not correspond with the filing system that is reflected in the original finding aid. However, a detailed description of the original location of the material as it was received is available.

Note that, while this addition has not been integrated into the original deposit, it has been arranged according to the organization scheme of the previously deposited materials (with Series 13.4.added).
