Collection Description

Series 8. Subjects.
Boxes 95-110

Sixteen boxes [6.7 linear shelf feet) of the Subjects series were opened to research in January 1974. At that time two boxes [0.84 linear shelf foot] were closed because of national security classification or donor restrictions. In addition, one-half box [0.21 linear shelf foot] of valuable original documents was withdrawn for preservation and replaced with electrostatic copies. The Subjects series was created by the Kennedy Library staff out of many small, whimsically created original files which did not belong in any of the well-defined series. Three small files, "Civil Rights," "Polls," and "Democratic National Committee," were transferred to the new series in their entirety. Other documents from a "Special Topics" file, from the "Daily Reports" file and from a large group of "Miscellaneous" files were added to the new series forming a large and varied topical file.

The resulting series includes documents relating to non-government organizations such as patriotic societies, to states and territories, and to many miscellaneous topics from the U-2 incident to mental retardation. In many cases, particularly with organizations and institutions, similar material may also be found in other series such as the Speech Files and General Correspondence. Quantity and quality are uneven throughout the series. The more valuable files include NATO, UN, Disarmament, and Nonaligned Nations Summit Meeting, in addition to those already mentioned above.

The material is arranged alphabetically by topic from Abu Simbel to Wyoming. Notable larger subseries include the topics mentioned and a good set of files on Trips.
