Hugh D. Auchincloss III (1927-  )

Biographical Note
 Born to Hugh Dudley Auchincloss, a lawyer and stockbroker, and Maya (Maria) de Chrapovitsky, daughter of a Russia naval officer, Hugh D. Auchincloss III (Yusha) was Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis' step-brother and close personal friend. After his father married Janet Lee Bouvier in June 1942, Yusha, age 14, and Jackie, age 12, spent summers together at Hammersmith Farm in Newport, Rhode Island, and corresponded extensively until her death in 1994. Auchincloss attended Groton School in Groton, Massachusetts, joining the Marine Corps upon graduation in 1945. In the Winter of 1947, Auchincloss entered Yale University. During the early 1950's, Auchincloss completed a second tour of duty in Korea and studied at the American University of Beirut. Much of the correspondence between Auchincloss and Onassis covers 1944 to 1952, as Onassis attended boarding school at Miss Porter's in Farmington, Connecticut and studied at Vassar College and the Sorbonne. Auchincloss later served with the U.S. delegation to the United Nations Sixteenth General Assembly with Ambassador Adlai Stevenson in 1961. In 1998, he published of short piece on his childhood with Jackie entitled Growing up with Jackie: My Memories 1941 - 1953.

Collection Overview
The personal papers of Hugh D. Auchincloss III consist of personal correspondence with Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis and a brief memoir of their relationship. The material is divided into two series. The first, Correspondence, contains letters between Auchincloss and Onassis and is arranged chronologically. The second series, Memoir, contains a copy of Auchincloss' memoir entitled Growing up with Jackie: My Memories 1941 - 1953 . Due to donor restrictions, all letters written by Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis are closed.

Personal correspondence between Hugh D. Auchincloss III and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. Includes letters, notes, postcards and telegrams. Correspondence dates from 1942 to 1994, but the bulk of the material dates from 1944 to 1946, when both Auchincloss and Onassis were in boarding school. Due to donor restrictions, all letters written by Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis are closed.

Thirty-four page memoir written by Auchincloss in 1997 titled Growing up with Jackie: My Memories 1941 - 1953 . Full of personal anecdotes and observations, the memoir was originally published in part in the Groton School Quarterly  (May 1998, Vol. LX no. 2).
