Collection Overview
The Personal Papers of William L(oran) Batt, Jr., cover the years 1949 through 1966. The papers have been organized according to the positions held by Mr. Batt within this time period. The bulk of the material relates to Mr. Batt's service as Administrator of the Area Redevelopment Administration under the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. There is also a large amount of material dealing with Mr. Batt's position as assistant to the United States Secretary of Labor. There is only a small amount of material in the file related to Mr. Batt's service as Secretary of Labor and Industry in Pennsylvania. However, this time period is more fully represented in the newsclipping file.

Material related to Mr. Batt's position as Administrator of the Area Redevelopment Administration (ARA) under the Kennedy and Johnson administration. This agency was responsible for determining which depressed areas of the country would receive federal aid. The material traces the history of the ARA from its conception in 1961 until its end in 1966. Material includes reports on certain depressed areas, votes on ARA appropriations, a bound volume detailing Lady Bird Johnson's trip to Eastern Kentucky in 1964, personal and professional correspondence on a variety of topics dealing with the ARA, and material showing Mr. Batt's support for the Public Works and Economic Development Act of 1965 (S. 6991).

About 1,800 items.
Arrangement: chronological.
Newsclippings span Mr. Batt's career from 1949 to 1966, with the bulk of the material documenting 1961-1966. Clippings were taken from various newspapers and magazines throughout the country. Along with the loose newsclippings are seven bound scrapbooks, running from 1957 to 1961. The scrapbooks have been kept in their original form while the loose clippings have been photocopied. Of note is a plaque dated September 13, 1965, which reads: "In recognition of Bill Batt, ARA Administrator: America's Mister Industrial Development."
