Papers 1948-1998.
Economics educator and researcher, government official. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for International Affairs (1961-62). Correspondence, memorandums, reports, studies, magazines, and news clippings relating to international trade, the balance of payments, and his service in the Commerce Department.

Personal Papers of Jack N(ewton) Behrman (1922-)

Biographical Note
Jack N. Behrman was born in Waco, Texas on 5 March 1922. He received a Bachelor's degree from Davidson College (1943), and graduate degrees in economics from the University of North Carolina (M.A., 1945) and Princeton University (M.A., 1950, and Ph.D., 1952). He taught at Davidson College, Princeton University, Washington and Lee University, University of Delaware, University of North Carolina, and Harvard University. During his summers, Dr. Behrman worked as a consultant on research projects for both private sector and U.S. government clients, including the Committee for Economic Development (1960).  Dr. Behrman joined the Department of Commerce in 1961, serving first as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Affairs, then as the Assistant Secretary for International Affairs, and later, Assistant Secretary for Domestic and International Business.  In August 1964, he left the department to teach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  A specialist in the fields of multinational enterprise, international finance, international government-business relations, and Latin America, Dr. Behrman has served as a consultant and lecturer for a number of Department of State projects.  In 1970, 1973, and 1974, he served as a consultant for the Bureau of Intelligence and Research. In 1972, 1974, and 1975, he was a lecturer for the United States Information Agency in Latin America, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Between 1975 and 1976, he was a member of the Advisory Committee on Foreign Investment to Under Secretary of State Charles Robinson.  A copy of Dr. Behrman's resume may be found in the first folder of box 1.
