Usage Restrictions
According to the deed of gift signed 1990, copyright of these materials has been retained by Jerry Bruno, donor. Upon the death of the donor, all said rights shall pass to Catherine H. Bruno. Researchers must contact Mr. Bruno before quoting beyond what is considered "fair use." Documents in this collection that were prepared by officials of the United States as part of their official duties are in the public domain. Users of these materials are advised to determine the copyright status of any document from which they wish to publish.

Withdrawn Items
In accordance with the donor's deed of gift, seventy-nine (79) pages of material, which, if published, would result in unwarranted invasion of personal privacy, have been removed. These include documents which may be used to injure or harass any living person. Withdrawal sheets identifying these items have been placed in the file. All withdrawn documents have been placed under seal and upon request the Kennedy Library will review any material which has been closed for a period of not less than 2 years for the purpose of opening items which no longer require restrictions. Researchers should consult the reference staff to obtain the appropriate form(s).

Biographical Note

Gerald J. “Jerry” Bruno was an advance man for President John F. Kennedy. Mr. Bruno did advance work for the trips and speaking engagements of John F. Kennedy's 1960 presidential campaign, especially in the 1960 Wisconsin primary. From 1964 to 1968, Bruno worked for Robert Kennedy doing advance work primarily for Senator Kennedy's appearances throughout New York state during those years. In 1971, Bruno wrote a book with Jeff Greenfield titled, The Advance Man .

Collection Overview
The personal papers of Jerry Bruno are arranged in four series: William Proxmire File, John F. Kennedy File, Robert F. Kennedy File, and Manuscripts. The collection dates from 1952 to 1971, with the bulk of the material from the period 1960 to 1968. It consists of brochures, correspondence, maps, memoranda, newsclips, notes, political literature, press releases, publications, reports, schedules, and the manuscripts for The Advance Man . The great majority of the material documents the advance work Mr. Bruno did for the trips and speaking engagements of President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy. This advance work began during John F. Kennedy's 1960 presidential campaign, and the .collection contains a sizable amount of information on the 1960 Wisconsin primary. Bruno worked for Robert Kennedy from 1964 to 1968, and the papers contain detailed information on Senator Kennedy's appearances throughout New York state during those years.

Researchers should note that related material on President Kennedy's trips can be found in his papers filed under the Pre-Presidential Papers, 1960 Campaign Files; President's Office Files, Subjects, Trips; and President's Office Files, Personal Secretary's Files, Schedules. There is also material in Godfrey McHugh's Papers and Theodore Sorensen's Papers. Material on Robert Kennedy's domestic trips can be found in I his Senate Correspondence: Personal File, filed under "Schedules." l Robert Kennedy's Senate Papers contain a Trips series which documents his foreign trips from 1964 to 1966.

Arrangement: by draft.

This series contain s drafts, proofs and galleys of The Advance Man , which was published in 1971. The manuscript of the unpublished book is closed during Jerry Bruno’s lifetime. The draft of this work on the Kennedy family was written by an author of children’s books who interviewed Bruno several times.
