Collection Overview
The Papers of Robert H. Estabrook contain copies of a number of his memoranda of conversations with President Kennedy, Harold Macmillan, David Bruce, Jean Monnet, Alexander Fomin, and Generals Lemnitzer and Norstad. Many of the memoranda are prefaced with, "for background only" or "not for attribution". The topics are as far-ranging as the participants. Topics frequently discussed are U.S.-Soviet Relations, NATO, the 1962 trans-Himalayan conflict and, European reactions to world events. The majority of the memoranda originated overseas and are so noted in their folder titles. All others took place in the United States. The collection has retained its original chronological order.

These do not represent a complete collection of Mr. Estabrook's memoranda. When Mr. Estabrook was assigned as the Post's  chief foreign correspondent, the Post misplaced a majority of his papers. Memoranda from the period before 1961 are copies of carbons he sent to Chalmers Roberts, who was also at the Post at that time. Mr. Estabrook has also donated papers to the Mass Communications History Center of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin at Madison.
