Open in part.  Fay papers which remain closed to research use include an Oral History interview of Mr. Fay (1970), correspondence with John F. Kennedy (some of which is duplicated in the open material), correspondence with Jacqueline Kennedy, and a film made by Mr. Fay.

Usage Restrictions
According to the deed of gift signed October 1971, copyright of these materials has been retained by Paul B. Fay, Jr. Upon the donor's death, all said rights shall pass to the United States.

Copyright
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.  Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction.  One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.”  If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excesses of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement.  This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.  The copyright law extends its protection to unpublished works from the moment of creation in a tangible form.  Direct your questions concerning copyright to the reference staff.

Withdrawn Items
Selected folders may contain withdrawal sheets where documents, in accordance with the donor's deed of gift, were removed from the collection. These include documents which may be used to injure or harass any living person. All withdrawn documents have been placed under seal and upon request the Kennedy Library will review any material which has been closed for a period of not less than 2 years for the purpose of opening items which no longer require restrictions. Researchers should consult the reference staff to obtain the appropriate form(s).

1918 Born July 8, San Francisco, CA.
1941 B.A. in Economics from Stanford.
1942-1946 Ensign to Lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserves.
1946 Married Anita Marcus, October 5. Children: Katherine Finn, Paul Burgess III, Sally Symington.
1946-1961 Vice President of Fay Improvement Co. (construction) in San Francisco.
1961-1965 Under Secretary of the Navy.
1966 Wrote The Pleasure of His Company about President Kennedy.

Collection Overview
The personal papers of Paul Fay, Jr. relate to his book The Pleasure of His Company , published in 1966, about his long-time friendship with John F. Kennedy. Materials include 2 typescript drafts of the book, a copy of John F. Kennedy's account of the "PT-109" incident, correspondence with John F. Kennedy quoted in the book, other correspondence with John F. Kennedy, and correspondence with Jacqueline Kennedy also relating mainly to the book. Much of the correspondence is closed. The film Mr. Fay donated is used, in part for the presentation shown in the John F. Kennedy Museum.

Materials for the book, The Pleasure of His Company, include 2 typescript drafts of the book, a copy of John F. Kennedy's account of the "PT-109" incident, correspondence with John F. Kennedy quoted in the book, other correspondence with John F. Kennedy, and correspondence with Jacqueline Kennedy also relating mainly to the book. Typescript draft 5a is a xerox copy of most of the manuscript with comments by Jacqueline Kennedy and Evan Thomas. Typescript draft 5b is a xerox copy of the partial manuscript, containing Robert F. Kennedy's comments and underlined recommended deletions. The manuscripts are arranged numerically by chapter. The second draft is held by permission of Stanford University.
