According to the deed of gift signed November 1976, copyright of these materials has been assigned to the United States. The Personal Papers of Gerhard A. Gesell (1910-1993)
Biographical Note
Gerhard A. Gesell was born on June 16, 1910 in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from Yale University with an A.B. and received his LL.B in 1935. That same year he began working as an attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). After leaving the SEC in 1941, Gesell began working at the firm of Covington and Burling in Washington, D.C. From 1945 to 1946, he served as chief assistant counsel on the Joint Congressional Committee on Investigation of the Pearl Harbor Attack. In 1961 he was appointed by President Kennedy to chair the Committee on Equal Opportunity in the Armed Services; the committee concluded its findings in 1964. Upon leaving Covington and Burling in 1967, Gesell served as U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Columbia from 1968 to 1993. Gerhard A. Gesell died on February 19, 1993.
