Author; journalist; Director of Public Information, Department of Justice (1961-1964); Press assistant to Robert F. Kennedy (1964-1965). Materials relating to Attorney General Robert Kennedy’s 1964 trips; daily reminders, monthly planners, magazine articles and other materials relating to Robert F. Kennedy (1964-1993); material on the Watergate investigation (1973-1974) and material relating to his career in journalism, including drafts of "We Band of Brothers," (1948-1999).

According to the deed of gift signed April 2002, Edwin Guthman, donor, has retained copyright of this material. Upon the donor’s death, all said rights shall pass to the United States Government.

Collection Overview

The Personal Papers of William Guthman documents his work in The U.S. Department of Justice under Attorney General Robert F Kennedy, and his role as Press Assistant for Senator Robert F Kennedy as well as Guthman's career as a writer and journalist. The collection is organized into 4 series with the bulk of the collection found in the first series. Series 1. Robert F Kennedy, is arranged into three subseries; Department of Justice documents Guthman's work as the special Assistant for Public Information in The U.S. Department of Justice under Attorney General Robert F Kennedy; Press Assistant documents Guthman's work as the Press Assistant for Senator Robert F Kennedy; and Post RFK documents Guthman's continuing interest in work to preserve the memory of Robert F Kennedy. All the material relates to Guthman's work with Robert F Kennedy in general and each subseries further documents Guthman's work in his work capacities. Series 2. Journalism, documents Guthman's journalism career, and includes articles and research, clippings relating to his Pulitzer prize and extensive information and research on the Watergate scandal. Series 3. Writings, contains material related to Guthman's published monographs, including drafts and complete manuscripts. Series 4.Personal material includes university class notes, certificates, and a transcript of a Seattle Times oral history interview. Series 5. Audio-visual, consists of audio cassette tapes, vinyl records, Film, and video cassettes relating to Robert F Kennedy.

Series 1. Robert F. Kennedy

The Robert F. Kennedy series is arranged into three subseries; Department of Justice, Press Assistant, and Post RFK. All material relates to Guthman's work with Robert F Kennedy in general and each subseries further documents Guthman's work in its specific capacities.

The Department of Justice subseries documents Guthman's work as the special Assistant for Public Information in The U.S. Department of Justice under Attorney General Robert F Kennedy.
