Collection Overview
The personal papers of Fowler Hamilton document his work as Director of the State Department’s Agency for International Development (AID). The papers are organized into four series: Correspondence, Speeches, Foreign Trips, and Scrapbooks. The correspondence series consists of congressional testimony and correspondence, both incoming and outgoing, regarding Hamilton’s appointment to AID, his work, and his resignation. Correspondents include private individuals, representatives of companies and public officials, including senators, congressmen, and the President. The speeches consist of appearances, testimony and speeches, including “Meet the Press” transcripts and statements in support of the Foreign Assistance Act before various congressional committees. The trip files consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings (mostly foreign), economic data, and progress reports. The clippings scrapbook includes items from all over the U.S. concerning Fowler Hamilton and/or Foreign Aid.

Series Description

Series 1. Correspondence.
Arrangement: by type.

The correspondence series consists of congressional testimony and correspondence, both incoming and outgoing, regarding Hamilton’s appointment to AID. The letters are alphabetically ordered, with Hamilton's responses stapled to them, and were sent to Hamilton by private individuals, as well as representatives of companies and public officials, including senators, congressmen, and the President. Two folders of letters concern Hamilton’s resignation. Other files of interest are an activity report for Hamilton’s first six months in office; basic economic data fact sheets for thirty different countries receiving financial aid from the U.S.; and reports regarding the work, program, and economic policy of the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development).
