Usage Restrictions
According to Mary Hemingway's will, signed October 1979, copyright of these materials has been retained by the donor’s heirs. The papers were given to the Library in accordance with Mrs. Hemingway's Last Will and Testament. No restrictions to quote, cite, or paraphrase, within the bounds of "Fair Use," have been placed on this collection. Copyright to photographs contained in this collection has been donated to the United States Government. All photographic materials have been transferred to the audiovisual department of the Library.

Withdrawn Items: 13 items.
Selected folders may contain withdrawal sheets where documents, in accordance with the donor's deed of gift, were removed from the collection. These include documents which may be used to injure or harass any living person. All withdrawn documents have been placed under seal and upon request the Kennedy Library will review any material which has been closed for a period of not less than 2 years for the purpose of opening items which no longer require restrictions. Researchers should consult the reference staff to obtain the appropriate form(s).

Collection Overview
The papers of Mary Welsh Hemingway span the years from approximately 1930 until 1986. The bulk of the material covers the time period 1946 to 1961, the duration of her marriage to Ernest Hemingway. The collection is arranged into eight series. The first series contains Mary Hemingway's writings, arranged into 4 subseries. Subseries 1.1. Writings: How It Was, contains the manuscripts, setting copies, and galleys for her book, chronicling her life with Ernest Hemingway. Subseries 1.2. Writings: Others, contains manuscripts and published articles written by Mrs. Hemingway that are not related to her book. Subseries 1.3. Writings: Notes contains notes, outlines, and manuscript corrections for several of Mrs. Hemingway’s stories. Subseries 1.4. Journals, contains diaries, journal entries and notebooks of Mrs. Hemingway. Series 2. consists of Mrs. Hemingway's correspondence, both incoming and outgoing. This includes personal correspondence as well as business letters. There are also several boxes of condolence mail received after the death of Ernest Hemingway. Series 3. Newsclippings, is arranged into three subseries, Mary Hemingway, Ernest Hemingway, and Subject newsclippings. Newspaper articles following Mary Hemingway's career and personal life, beginning with the earliest days of her career in journalism and continuing throughout her life. Articles, interviews, and editorials from newspapers from all over the world chronicling the life and career of Ernest Hemingway. Also included are six folders of obituaries written following the death of Mr. Hemingway. Articles related to subject topics important to Mrs. Hemingway, include bullfighting, Idaho wilderness, Idaho politics, and Cuba. Series 4. Miscellanous Papers contains journals, writing notes, newsclippings, and legal papers. Series 5. Tributes to Ernest Hemingway, contains essays and published articles written in tribute to Ernest Hemingway following his death. Series 6. Screenplays and Theses on Ernest Hemingway, contains screenplays for movies based Ernest Hemingway's writings and copies of scholarly research and theses written about Ernest Hemingway and his writings. Series 7. Others' Writings, contains writings by others, including Ernest Hemingway, T.J. Welsh, and Noel Monks. Series 8. Museum Objects, contains non-paper materials including three-dimensional objects of Mary Hemingway.
Note to Researchers
During the initial control and processing of these papers, many items belonging to Ernest Hemingway were found. Each such item was transferred into the Ernest Hemingway Collection. During final processing, photocopies were made of all of Ernest Hemingway papers remaining in the Mary Hemingway Collection. These photocopies were placed in the Papers of Mary Hemingway and those originals were transferred to the Ernest Hemingway Papers. 348 such items were transferred. The collection also contains nineteen black and white photographs and two color photographs. These materials have been transferred to the Library's audiovisual department. Researchers should note that there is also an oral history interview with Mary Welsh Hemingway available in the Kennedy Library.
