Educator. Professor of government, Harvard University (1910-1955). Material relating to a lecture given by John F. Kennedy at Harvard in 1952, and to the political effects of an article by John Mallan that appeared in the New Republic  during the 1960 Presidential campaign.

The Personal Papers of Arthur N. Holcombe (1884-1977)

Biographical Note
Arthur Norman Holcombe was born in Winchester, Massachusetts, on November 3, 1884. He graduated from Harvard with an AB in 1906; and in 1909, he obtained his Ph.D. from that university. On August 30, 1910, he married Carolyn H. Crossett. They had five children. In 1964, he married Hadassah Moore Leeds Parrot. Holcombe split his career between public service and teaching. He was credited with establishing political philosophy and theory as basic disciplines in Harvard’s government curriculum. Among his students were Henry A. Kissinger and Henry Cabot Lodge. In 1949, he assisted Chiang Kai Shek in the drafting of a constitution for the Republic of China. In 1955, he retired as Eaton Professor of the Sciences of Government to become chairman of the Committee to Study the Organization of Peace, an affiliate of the American Association for the United Nations. He died on December 9, 1977.

Collection Overview
This collection is a small set of material from 1952 to 1960. It includes correspondence from Congressman John F. Kennedy regarding a talk he gave at a seminar on legislative process in the Graduate School of Public Administration at Harvard in 1950. The correspondence followed an article by John P. Mallan published in the New Republic , October 13, 1952. The collection contains correspondence between both Mallan and Holcombe and Congressman Kennedy. It also includes letters to and from the editor of the New Republic . The article surfaced again in 1959, when Senator John F. Kennedy was campaigning for the Presidency. Holcombe corresponded with Kennedy again as a reprint of the article was being planned.

Mallan and Holcombe and Congressman Kennedy, and correspondence with the editor of the New Republic . The correspondence follows an article by John P.
