Collection Overview
The papers of Nicholas deBelleville Katzenbach, former Attorney General of the United States, span the years 1961 to 1968. The majority of the material covers the time period 1962 to 1966, while Mr. Katzenbach was Deputy Attorney General and then Attorney General of the United States. An important component of the collection consists of material dealing with civil rights struggles in the south during Mr. Katzenbach's tenure as Attorney General. The series "Civil Rights File, 1965-1966" is solely devoted to this topic. There is additional material on the subject in the "White House Correspondence" series. Another major issue concerning the Department of Justice at that time was investigations into organized crime. Most of the material regarding organized crime can be found in the series "Subject File: Justice Department." Researchers should note that there are also two oral history interviews with Nicholas Katzenbach available in the Kennedy Library.
