Series 10.2. Classified Subject File, 1961-1964.
Arrangement: alphabetical by subject.

The Kennedy Library artificially created this file in the early 1970's when national security items were removed from unclassified items during processing. This division of the Subject File resulted in two separate files: The Subject File, which contained the unclassified material; and the Classified Subject File, which contained the classified material. Later, re-integration of materials was accomplished through Angola (boxes WH-1 - WH-3). The remainder of the files will not be re-integrated but will remain as two separate files therefore researchers should use the White House Subject File and the White House Classified Subject File in conjunction with one another.

The folder title list for this series. Since this series has now been processed, researchers who would like to request a review of the closed items should complete a Mandatory Review form. Please note: when filling out Mandatory Request forms for the Classified Subject File, please use the location information (folder title and box number) which is printed on the bottom of the yellow withdrawal sheet, rather than the location information from the folder and box in which you find the form. The Library can only process Mandatory Review requests that list the closed box information. The Library will be unable to process forms without the correct information.

Subseries 11.2. Remarks for the President, 1961-1963.
Arrangement: chronological.

Mainly drafts of presidential speeches, messages, remarks, proclamations, and toasts, with a small number of draft articles, book prefaces, and suggestions for television appearances. Drafts are often accompanied by background material including correspondence, memoranda, news releases, a small number of newsclippings, and in some cases, final versions of the president's remarks. The speeches and other remarks vary greatly in subject and reflect the President's schedule of visits to U.S. cities and foreign countries, meetings with heads of state, greetings to visiting groups and dignitaries, messages to Congress, remarks at state receptions and banquets, and official proclamations. In addition to remarks prepared for the President, this series includes one folder of remarks prepared for the First Lady and one folder of remarks prepared for the Vice President.

Researchers should be aware that in most cases, the dates on the folders represent the actual date the speech, message, or other remark was delivered and not the date(s) of any drafts, correspondence, or other background material that may also be included in the folder. However, if the date a message or other remark was delivered could not be readily established, the date(s) of the items contained in the folder were used instead.

This series does not represent a complete compilation of drafts and background materials for the speeches and other remarks made by President Kennedy. Speeches, announcements, remarks, and proclamations on numerous other topics not included here may also be found in the President's Office Files sub-file of the Presidential Papers of John F. Kennedy. Researchers may find the Speech Files of the Papers of Theodore Sorensen, also in the Kennedy Library, a helpful additional source. Another source researchers may wish to consult is Public Papers of the Presidents, John F. Kennedy, 1961-1963 .
