Personal Papers of Arthur M. Schlesinger (1917-2007)

Biographical Note
Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., was born in Columbus, Ohio on October 15, 1917.  He received his A.B. summa cum laude from Harvard University in 1938, was a postgraduate Henry Fellow at Cambridge University in England from 1938 to 1939, and a member of the Harvard Society of Fellows from 1939 to 1942.  Schlesinger was with the Office of War Information from 1942 through 1943 and the Office of Strategic Services from 1943 to 1945.  In 1945, he served in the United States Army.  Following the war, he was an associate professor at Harvard from 1946 to 1954 and professor from 1954 to 1961.

During 1948, Schlesinger served as a consultant to the Economic Cooperation Administration and in 1951 and 1952 to the Mutual Security Administration.  He was a member of Adlai Stevenson's campaign staff in 1952 and 1956.  In 1960, he worked as a speechwriter in John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign.  Schlesinger was appointed Special Assistant to the President by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 and held the position until 1964.  He then served as a visiting fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton University in 1966.  Schlesinger was appointed Albert Schweitzer Professor of Humanities at the City University of New York in 1966 and held this position until his retirement in 1994.  He has served as a trustee of the Twentieth Century Fund and the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial, and as a member of the board of directors of the Harry S. Truman Library Institute, the John F. Kennedy Library, and the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute (co-chairman, 1983-present).

Schlesinger was a member of many professional historical, cultural, scholarly, and literary associations including the American Historical Association, Organization of American Historians, American Philosophical Society, Massachusetts Historical Society, Colonial Society of Massachusetts, Russian Academy, ACLU, Council on Foreign Relations, Century Association, and Phi Beta Kappa.  In addition, he served as president (1981-1984) and chancellor (1984-1987) of the American Institute of Arts and Letters; Society of American Historians, (1989-1992); and as national chairman of the Americans for Democratic Action (1953-1954).  He was the recipient of the following scholarly awards: the Pulitzer prize for History (1946); the Francis Parkman prize (1957); the Bancroft prize (1958); the Pulitzer prize for Biography (1966); the National Book Award (1966, 1979); the American Institute of Arts and Letters Gold medal for History (1967); and the Fregeme prize for literature (Italy, 1983).

Schlesinger was the author of numerous books including:  Orestes A. Brownson: A Pilgrim's Progress (1939), The Age of Jackson (1945), The Vital Center (1949), The General and the President (with Richard Rovere) (1951), The Crisis of the Old Order (1957), The Coming of the New Deal (1958), The Politics of Upheaval (1960), Kennedy or Nixon (1960), The Politics of Hope (1963), A Thousand Days: John F. Kennedy in the White House (1965), The Bitter Heritage: Vietnam and American Democracy (1967), The Crisis of Confidence: Ideas, Powers, and Violence in America (1969), The Imperial Presidency (1973), Robert F. Kennedy and His Times (1978), The Cycles of American History (1986), and The Disuniting of America (1991).  Schlesinger has been a film reviewer for Show magazine, 1962-1964; Vogue , 1967-1972; Saturday Review , 1977-1980; American Heritage , 1981-1982; and was a judge at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964.

Arthur M. Schlesinger died February 28, 2007.

 

Collection Overview
The Personal Papers of Arthur Schlesinger have been divided into three subcollections: Private Files, White House Files and Writings. Each subcollection is divided into several series.

The open materials from the personal papers of Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. consist of some of Mr. Schlesinger's papers for the period 1945-1965 when he was a professor, Special Assistant to the President, and an author.

Subcollection 1., Private Files, contains 5 series: Incoming Correspondence, 1945-1960; Correspondence, 1961-1965; Alphabetical Subject File, 1960-1965; John F. Kennedy Library File, 1961-1965; and White House Journal. Two series are open, Incoming Correspondence 1945-1960 and Alphabetical Subject File 1960-1965. The Incoming Correspondence 1945-1960 series documents a vast range of political and intellectual concerns, arguments, and endeavors from the 1945-1960 period. The Alphabetical Subject File, 1960-1965 documents Mr. Schlesinger's private and professional activities during the period including his relationships with the Kennedys; his publisher, networks and magazines; and various groups he was associated with, such as Americans for Democratic Action, the Harry S. Truman Library Institute, the Twentieth Century Fund, the Cannes Film Festival and Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Subcollection 2., White House Files, contains 6 series, Telephone Logs, 1961-1965; Schedules, 1962-1965; Chronological File, 1961-1964; Subject File, 1961-1964; Classified Subject File, 1961-1964; and Speech File, 1961-1964. The Subject File and Classified Subject File are parallel series comprised of the materials Mr. Schlesinger generated and/or collected while he was in the White House. They include materials on most areas of foreign policy, and intellectual and cultural affairs. The Memoranda to the President, Remarks for the President and Classified Chronological File consists of various correspondence during the White House years as an aide to the President. Schlesinger's Personal Speech File consists of drafts and final speeches delivered by Mr. Schlesinger.

Subcollection 3., Writings, contains the series A Thousand Days, consisting of two subseries: Background Materials and Manuscripts. Two additional undeeded series, Robert F. Kennedy and His Times ; and Articles, 1940-1984, were transferred to the New York Public Library in September 2007.

Other Schlesinger material available at the Kennedy Library includes Schlesinger's correspondence in the President's Office Files: Special Correspondence and Staff Memoranda, and Mr. Schlesinger's oral history interview.

Arrangement: alphabetical by correspondent name, then chronologically.

Incoming correspondence, reports, clippings, speeches and other materials documenting Mr. Schlesinger's personal, political, and cultural relationships. Occasionally includes carbons of Mr. Schlesinger's replies. The issues detailed include the origin and activities of Americans for Democratic Action; the elections of 1948, 1952, and 1956, and their respective administrations, and the 1960 election; specifically, the 1952 and 1956 presidential campaigns of Adlai Stevenson; McCarthyism and other civil rights issues; foreign policy and the Cold War; the International Congress for Cultural Freedom; and correspondence with major figures in literature, the theater, and cinema, as well as with foreign dignitaries and intellectuals; magazine and book publications, critiques, global travel; and personal matters.

Truman Library Institute and the Twentieth Century Fund. Mr. Schlesinger was also a film reviewer during this period and there are materials on the various journals he wrote for and the Cannes Film Festival where he was a judge.
