The Personal Papers of Frank E. Smith (1918-1997)

Biographical Note
Frank Ellis Smith was born in Sidon, Mississippi on February 21, 1918. He graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1941 and shortly thereafter joined the United States Army as a private in 1942. Upon graduation from Field Artillery Officer Candidate School he served as a Captain with the Two Hundred and Forty-third Field Artillery Battalion seeing action in Europe during World War II and receiving the Bronze Star. After the war he served as legislative assistant to United States Senator John Stennis from 1947-1949 and then served on the Mississippi State Senate from 1948-1950. Representative Smith was elected to the 82nd Congress in November 1950 and subsequently re-elected to the 83rd, 84th, 85th, 86th and 87th serving in Congress from January 3, 1951 to November 14, 1962.

The papers of Frank E. Smith primarily consist of correspondence, papers, reports and other materials Mr. Smith compiled while serving on the Kennedy-Johnson National Resource Advisory Committee from 1960-1961. Additional items include reports, recommendations and other accompanying materials submitted by committee members to be considered in the final report to Senator John F. Kennedy. The collection contains one series entitled Kennedy-Johnson National Resource Advisory Committee Files.

This series consists of correspondence, reports and files compiled by Frank E. Smith. The bulk of the correspondence is between Smith and N.R.A.C. committee members. Reports contain information about environmental surveys and projects to be undertaken by the committee, and files are primarily comprised of contact information and finances. Notable material in this series includes correspondence with Senator John F. Kennedy and his staff, as well as George McGovern and Gore Vidal. Other materials include photographs and maps of projects submitted to the N.R.A.C. and one photo of Smith and Senator John F. Kennedy.
