The Personal Papers of Al Webb (1920-2003)
Biographical Note
Allan Webb was born on February 15, 1920, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Harrison, New York, and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1942. Webb took a sabbatical between his freshman and sophomore years at UNC to join the Merchant Marine where he spent a year as an ordinary seaman.
After graduation, Webb enlisted in the Navy. He entered midshipman school in South Bend, Indiana, and Chicago, Illinois, and then went to motor torpedo training in Melville, Rhode Island in 1943. He then shipped to the South Pacific where he served on a PT boat and became friends with John F. Kennedy.
After his discharge from the Navy, Webb returned to Harrison, New York, and took a sales job with the Hat Corporation of America (circa 1946). In 1950, he married Virginia Jose, and had four daughters. The Hat Corporation of America transferred Webb to Jackson, Mississippi in 1952. He was transferred back to the New York Office in the early 1960's. After the demise of the hat business he spent the rest of his career in menswear sales, retiring in 1986. He then moved to Tucson, Arizona. Al Webb died in May 2003.
