Oral History Interviews (1968): Bayley completed two interviews for the John F. Kennedy Library: JFK#1 interview, 10/10/1968; JFK#2 interview, 12/19/1968. In the first interview, Bayley discusses the 1960 primary and presidential campaigns in Wisconsin, including Governor Gaylord Nelson’s role in the campaigns; the 1960 Democratic National Convention; forming the Peace Corps administration and mission; and attempts to fix the Kennedy Administration’s public image, as well as to improve the operations of the White House Press Secretary. In the second interview he discusses U.S. AID and the Peace Corps, including the staffing of both organizations, controversies and scandals, the difficulties of getting Congress to allocate money for foreign aid, the Alliance for Progress, and R. Sargent Shriver, Jr.. He also discusses his involvement with the President’s Panel on Mental Retardation, among other issues.
