Government official. Secretary of Agriculture (1961-1969). Former Governor of Minnesota Orville Freeman was appointed Secretary of Agriculture in 1961, and held the position until 1969. Freeman's term as Secretary of Agriculture expanded the department’s jurisdiction. He worked to establish a feed-grain reduction program, expanded the Agricultural Trade Development and Assistance Act, and forged a wheat deal with the Russians in 1963.
Papers (1960-1963) consist of correspondence, memorandums, notes, reports, speeches, interviews, diary, and other personal papers. Original diary is on deposit in the Minnesota Historical Society.
