Metadata Cataloger

The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has embarked on an effort to build a new digital library.  The initiative’s objectives are to digitize, index and archive millions of presidential documents, manuscripts, photographs and other audiovisual recordings; to provide online accessibility to a worldwide audience; to allow the collection to be searched using metadata; to protect historical assets through remote replication; and to minimize wear and tear on irreplaceable physical assets.

Duties: You will serve as a Metadata Cataloger, performing duties associated with digitizing and describing original archival records. You will be responsible for review of digital images scanned from a variety of formats, and you will describe those images by creating technical and administrative metadata using Dublin Core standards.  You will research any facts that need to be included or clarified in the metadata record to make the records as accessible to the user as possible.  You will keep accurate statistics on the quantity, bibliographic maintenance, and time spent on each aspect of the metadata workflow.

Qualifications: This position requires knowledge of traditional cataloging standards and practices for original cataloging with experience with or knowledge of electronic resources and metadata schemas.  Specifically, you must have demonstrated knowledge of the Dublin Core metadata standard, XML, HTML, and digital imaging practices and standards.  You must be able to work well on a team and have strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.  Additional requirements include a demonstrated knowledge of library preservation issues and experience handling rare and fragile materials. Applicants with familiarity of intellectual property issues in a library/archive environment, knowledge of historical trends and research methods, and archival organization will be preferred.

Education: Minimum of a BA required.  Master's degree in library science, history or related field strongly preferred.

This is a two-year term position with the potential of extension.  You will be an employee of the Kennedy Library Foundation working in close conjunction with government staff.  The closing date in applying for this job is May 19, 2008.
