Scholars are invited to apply for the Theodore C. Sorensen Research Fellowship. This fellowship is administered by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation from funds provided by Mr. Sorensen, who headed John F. Kennedy's staff during his eight years as a senator and served as his Special Counsel during his three years as president.

The Sorensen Fellowship carries a stipend of up to $3,600. It is intended to support a scholar in the production of a substantial work in the areas of domestic policy, political journalism, polling, press relations or a related topic. The successful candidate will develop at least a portion of her or his work from original research in archival materials from the collections of the Kennedy Library.

The postmark deadline for application is March 15. Applicants will be promptly notified of their projects' eligibility. Awards will be announced on April 20. Applications received after the deadline will be considered in the next fellowship or grant cycle.

To obtain information about the Library's collections, applicants should contact a member of the research room staff at the address below or by phone (Telephone 617-514-1629) and request a copy of the Historical Materials in the John F. Kennedy Library.

To apply, submit an application form (pdf) accompanied by a brief proposal (three to four pages) in the form of a letter describing the planned research, its significance, the intended audience, and expected outcome; two letters of recommendation from academic or other appropriate references; a sample of your writing (circa ten pages); a project budget; and a vita. List the collections in the Kennedy Library and other institutions which you plan to use. Describe how the funds will be applied, other fellowships or grants which will support the project and whether matching funds are available to you from your institution or elsewhere. Preference is given to projects not supported by large grants from other institutions. Describe your qualifications and similar research projects you have undertaken. The estimated per diem cost of accommodations, meals and incidentals for Boston is $225.
