Knocking Out Injustice – Muhammad Ali’s Boxing Gloves
Beginning on February 1, 2008, the Museum at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library will display a pair of boxing gloves given to U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy by former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. This is the first time the Kennedy Presidential Library has ever displayed this item.
Ali, a long-time Kennedy family friend presented the gloves to Senator Kennedy during a meeting in Washington in July of 1988. Ali inscribed the glove: “I hope this glove helps you knock out injustice”.
The gloves will be on display for the month of February – Black History month, and will be part of the Museum at the Kennedy Presidential Library’s special exhibit – Shaping Up America: JFK, Sports and the Call to Physical Fitness.
The Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Library is located on Columbia Point next t the campus of the University of Massachusetts Boston. Admission for seniors over the age of 62 and college students with appropriate identification is $8.00, and for children ages 13-17, $7.00. Children ages 12 and under are admitted for free.
