Jacqueline Kennedy's choice of clothing for an event at The White House was as deliberate as every other element of the evening, complementing and giving further physical expression to the Continental refinement of her entertaining.
Oleg Cassini designed this evening dress in shell pink silk-georgette chiffon embroidered with sequins for Mrs. Kennedy's dinner at the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna on June 3, 1961 where she met the Soviet premier, Nikita Khrushchev.
Joan Morse (American, 1932-1972) for A La Carte designed this evening dress in hot pink and gold silk organza and metallic brocaded silk organza. Mrs. Kennedy wore it to a benefit performance of the musical Mr. President for the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation at the National Theatre in Washington D.C. on September 6, 1962. King Saud of Saudi Arabia had presented Jacqueline Kennedy with a length of magnificent silk brocade during his visit to the White House in February. The First lady had this fabric made into an evening dress by A La Carte, whose designer Joan Morse was noted for the flamboyant clothes she made from fabrics collected on her world travels.
This celadon silk jersey evening dress was designed by Oleg Cassini in 1962. Mrs. Kennedy chose to wear this dress while entertaining forty-nine Nobel laureates and other distinguished guests at a dinner at The White House honoring Nobel prizewinners of the Western Hemisphere on April 29, 1962.
