President and Mrs. Kennedy return to Washington from their brief vacation in Palm Beach, Florida.

In a letter dated May 11 published by Newsday, President Kennedy says that he has asked a lot of the American people and with some exceptions he has "been gratified by the response." He describes his appeal to "self-restraint" on the part of the news media as "without much success." He further states that "the whole tone and thrust" of his administration "will demand a higher standard of excellence from every individual."
