In his address at Independence Hall, broadcast on radio and television, President Kennedy says that the "doctrine of national independence…remains the most powerful force anywhere in the world today." "Even those unwilling or unable to take part in any struggle between East and West are strongly on the side of their own independence." He also announces that the U.S. "will be ready for a Declaration of Interdependence" to join a united Europe in creating a "concrete Atlantic partnership" of equal partners.
