Pencil manuscript, untitled, headed "Edith Cooper/James Allen. Chapter One." Sketch of a writer in Paris at the time of his divorce. Female character is Dorothy Rogers. Five chapters w/ink corrections. pp. 1-11, 13-46. 45 pp. (Scribners).

Portions published in The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway , Scribners, 1987. Chapters 1-4 published as "A Train Trip." Sections from chapters 13-15 published as "The Porter." The manuscript is divided into chapters 1-20. Page numbering begins at one with each chapter. The first 140 pages are also numbered consecutively. The second chapter 20 is written on versos of galleys 50-54 of Men Without Women (item #120a.5).
