The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation provides funds for the award of a number of research grants for scholars and students in the range of $200 to $1,000 to help defray living, travel, and related costs incurred while doing research in the Ernest Hemingway Collection. Grant applications are evaluated on the basis of expected utilization of the Hemingway Collection, the degree to which they address research needs in Hemingway and related studies, and the qualifications of applicants. Preference is given to dissertation research by Ph.D. candidates working in newly opened or relatively unused portions of the Collection, but all proposals are welcome and will receive careful consideration.
The postmark deadline for applications is November 2. Awards will be announced January 11. The grants will be for the next calendar year. Applications received after the closing date will be returned but may be considered the following year if revised and resubmitted.
To obtain information about the holdings of the Collection, applicants should contact the curator of the Hemingway Collection at 617- 514-1530 and also consult the Catalog of the Ernest Hemingway Collection at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, published by G.K. Hall & Co., 1982. The two-volume catalog is available in many libraries or can be obtained along with addenda through interlibrary loan from the Kennedy Library. The Manuscripts and Outgoing Correspondence portions are currently available.
To apply, submit an application form (pdf) accompanied by a brief proposal (three to four pages) in the form of a letter or memo describing the planned research, its significance, the intended audience, and expected outcome; two letters of recommendation from academic or other appropriate references; a sample of your writing (ca. ten pages); a project budget; and a vita. List the collections in the Kennedy Library and other institutions which you plan to use. Describe how the funds will be applied, other fellowships or grants which will support the project and whether matching funds are available to you from your institution or elsewhere. Preference is given to projects not supported by large grants from other institutions. Describe your qualifications and similar research projects you have undertaken. If possible, please submit the completed application form (pdf) and supporting materials in two formats: paper format to the address below and as attachments to an Email to Susan Wrynn, Ernest Hemingway Curator, at Susan.Wrynn@nara.gov.
The estimated per diem cost for accommodations, meals and incidentals for Boston is $225.
