Sound recording
White House Audio Collection
JFKWHA-194-004
Sound recording of President John F. Kennedy’s address at a luncheon for sponsors and editors of historical publications and toast to President Herbert Hoover in the State Dining Room of the White House. In his speech the President emphasizes the importance of understanding our history so we may have a prosperous future. He also discusses three proposals made by the National Historic Publications Commission: the top five privately financed projects currently underway be endowed by private philanthropic sources with sufficient funds to assure completion; a minimum of one million dollars in matching funds (half appropriated by Congress, half by private sources) be made available each year to the Commission over a ten year period for a grant-in-aid program to stimulate the collection, editing, and publication of materials; and legislation to authorize the grant-in-aid program and to permit payment of expenses for necessary advisory committees.
