Papers of John F. Kennedy. Presidential Papers. White House Staff Files of Walter W. Heller
JFKWHSFWWH-MF75-004
This folder contains material pertaining to the Panel on Civilian Technology, also known as the Wiesner Committee on Civilian Technology or the Scientific and Economic Policy Committee, which was established circa June 1961 to examine ways for the government to stimulate civilian research and development and use existing technology more effectively. Walter W. Heller represented the Council of Economic Advisers on the panel. Types of material include correspondence, memoranda, papers, and drafts. There is a copy of the published Report to the President's Science Advisory Committee on the Use of Pesticides (15 May 1963). Some material appears to be simply forwarded by Jerome B. Wiesner (Office of Science and Technology) and may not directly relate to the work of the Panel. Topics include an interdepartmental energy study, government patent policy, scientific manpower, urban transportation, and coal stockpiling. Of note is a formal statement explaining the background and objectives of the Panel.
