The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation provides funds to scholars and students interested in researching the Ernest Hemingway Collection. The grants (range: $200 - $1000 per person) are intended to help defray travel, living, and other research expenses. Grant applications are evaluated on the basis of: expected utilization of the Hemingway Collection; the project's contributions to Hemingway and/or related studies; and applicants' qualifications. Preference is given to dissertation research in newly-opened or under-utilized portions of the Hemingway Collection, though all proposals are welcome and receive careful consideration.

The postmark deadline for applications is November 2. Awards will be announced December 14. Applications received after the closing date will be returned and may be resubmitted for the following grant cycle.

To learn more about the Hemingway Collection's holdings, please consult our online finding aid, or contact the Hemingway Collection Curator at 617.514.1530.

To apply, please submit:

  1. an application form accompanied by a brief proposal (three to four pages) in the form of a letter or memo describing the planned research, its significance, the intended audience, and expected outcome;
  2. two letters of recommendation from academic or other appropriate references;
  3. a sample of your writing (approx. ten pages);
  4. a project budget;
  5. and a curriculum vitae.

In addition, please list the collections that you plan to use at the Kennedy Library and at other institutions. Describe how the funds will be applied, other fellowships or grants that will support the project, and whether matching funds are available to you at your institution or elsewhere. (Preference is given to projects not supported by large grants from other institutions.) Finally, describe your qualifications and other similar research projects that you have undertaken.

Please submit your completed application form and supporting materials to the Hemingway Curator via mail and email (see contact information below).
