Pair of Blue Jays
Crown Staffordshire
ca. 1960
7 3/4" x 8 7/8"
Pair of bone china blue jays. The birds are posed perched on tree stumps with backs glazed blue, wings turquoise, and breasts and throats pink.
These birds were presented to President John F. Kennedy by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, Prime Minister of England (1957-1963), at his country house Birch Grove in Sussex during the President's state visit to England June 29-30, 1963. Staffordshire is the pottery district in England where many famous porcelain and pottery factories are located. Birds in fairly naturalistic presentations have been popular subjects for porcelain groups both in England and on the Continent. This pair of blue jays continues the tradition.
