Abdul Rehman Chughtai (Pakistani, 1897-1975)
20th century
Tempera on heavy stock paper
Framed: 34" x 39 1/4"
This is a portrait of a young girl from Kashmir. The girl in this painting symbolizes the land of her birth; the delicately tinted hands, the cleanly chiseled face, soft garments are all suffused with poetic lyricism suggestive of the lotus, the lilac and the rose.
This painting was presented to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy by the President of Pakistan (1958-1969), Ayub Mohammed Khan during his visit to the White House on July 13, 1961.
