Wood, ivory
8 1/2" x 36 1/2" x 4 1/2"
Leopard-like animal carved in solid, polished ebony, with inlaid ivory eyes and teeth. Panther is in a striding position crouched low to the ground as if he is prowling. Statue stands on a rectangular base.
Carved with a fine feeling for the supple body of the animal, this is a work already removed from the traditions of African sculpture and influenced by Western art concepts. The hard, dense wood lends itself to a fine polish of gleaming black.
