Punch Bowl with Base
Maker unknown
early 19th century
Base: 10" x 9 1/2"; Bowl: 7" x 14"
Large bowl and footed stand made of crystal cut with alternating panels of diamonds and fluting and sixteen fan-shaped lobes on the rim.
This punch bowl was presented to President John F. Kennedy by Harold MacMillan, Prime Minister of England (1957-1963), during his state visit to the White House in April 1962. Although the art of glass-making is old, it was the discovery in seventeenth-century England of a new formula containing lead oxide than made the brilliance of cut glass possible. The fame of English and eventually Irish glass rests on this discovery.
