Gouache rendering of a gold and azurite paperweight that was designed as a gift for the Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg.

The first lady had long been searching for a gift both contemporary and original in design which could be called completely American.  A tour of the Hall of Minerals at the Smithsonian Institution gave her the idea of incorporating minerals, crystals, and gemstones mined in different regions of the United States into future state gifts.  Mrs. Kennedy contacted New York jeweler David Webb, and together they designed a series of unique paperweights.
