Statement from Caroline Kennedy and the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation on the Passing of Congressman John Lewis:
In 2001, Congressman John Lewis received a special John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for a lifetime of extraordinary courage, leadership, and commitment to civil rights. It was the first time that the Committee broadened the Award from a "single act of courage" as it is defined. That distinction says so much about the profound courage, sacrifice, principle, and patriotism of John Lewis. He lived as a giant among us, of both moral and physical courage, and will be remembered as a profile in courage not just for our time, but for all time. His life-long commitment to racial justice, human rights, and equality serves as an inspiration to us all to carry on his legacy in our own lives.
