Of note is a handwritten letter by President Kennedy requesting to defer his admission to Harvard University for one year so that he may study at the London School of Economics.

In his speech the Senator addresses foreign policy under President Dwight D. Eisenhower's administration including United States involvement in Southeast Asia, the growing threat of communism, strengthening national security, and nuclear weapons control.
