Astronaut Lieutenant Colonel John H. Glenn, Jr. (left) explains the details of the space capsule Friendship 7 to President John F. Kennedy (at right, facing away) following the presentation ceremony of his National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Distinguished Service Medal at Hangar 'S,’ Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Brevard County, Florida. The Friendship 7 carried Lieutenant Colonel Glenn in orbit around the earth three times. Those looking on include: Senator Warren G. Johnson (partially hidden behind the President), and Director of the Manned Spacecraft Center Dr. Robert Gilruth (mostly hidden, behind Vice President Johnson).
