Folder Description
This folder consists of Department of State cables regarding negotiations between the United Nations (UN), Congolese politician Moise Tshombe, and Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo (Leopoldville) Cyrille Adoula for the reintegration of Katanga Province into the Congo; United States policy for the Congo; and a payment scheme for the UMHK (Union Minière du Haut-Katanga, or Mining Union of Upper Katanga) to be paid to the Congo’s Monetary Council and the Katanga Province. Also included are cables discussing the Katanga gendarmerie, and a U.S. military mission to survey UN forces in the Congo.
