Dictation Belt 16A contains five sound recordings. Item 16A.1 is a recording of remarks made by President John F. Kennedy to an unidentified group of visitors. The remarks concern the United States economy. This is not a telephone conversation. The recording begins in mid-sentence. Item 16A.2 is a fragment of a telephone conversation held on March 26, 1963, between President John F. Kennedy and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. They discuss congressional hearings. The recording begins in mid-conversation. Item 16A.3 is a telephone conversation held on March 26, 1963, between President John F. Kennedy and Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara. They discuss hearings concerning the TFX airplane. The recording begins in mid-conversation. Item 16A.4 is a telephone conversation between President John F. Kennedy and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. They discuss Senate hearings concerning the TFX airplane. They also discuss a raid by Cuban exiles targeting a ship, concerns about a Russian ship being targeted, and consultations with John A. McCone. The recording begins in mid-conversation. Item 16A.5 is a telephone conversation held on March 28, 1963, between President John F. Kennedy and Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs William R. Tyler. They discuss press reports of Canadian Prime Minister John G. Diefenbaker possessing a working paper written by Walt W. Rostow on relations between the United States and Canada.Transcript included. Items include an unattributed paper titled "Trading with the Enemy," regarding the sale of Canadian wheat to the Soviet Union; an internal Council of Economic Advisers memorandum on "The Underlying Problem of U.S.-Canadian Economic Relations"; a report submitted to the Royal Commission on Banking and Finance by W. Earle McLaughlin of the Royal Bank of Canada (July 1962); a booklet on the 1962 outlook for private and public investment in Canada; and two papers about the Canadian dollar by William Stix Wasserman. Note that although most material in this file is from 1962 to 1964, some items date back to 1960.

XII, no. 3, December 1963); and an article by Lockley titled "Another Look at the School of Business Graduate," reprinted from Collegiate News and Views. Kennedy before the United States Senate regarding construction of the Saint Lawrence Seaway that would connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. In his speech the Senator announces his support of a bill to allow for participation by the U.S. in the project due to economic benefits in the construction, operation, and administration of the Seaway. The Senator also addresses concerns regarding the economic impact of the Saint Lawrence Seaway on the Port of Boston.

Materials primarily consist of memorandums and briefing papers for the President on domestic and foreign affairs and national security. Topics include gold losses, the Canadian economy, the stock market, the President's forthcoming trip to Mexico, and the recent United States Supreme court decision banning prayer in public schools. Also included are draft press conference announcements and newspaper clippings.
