This file contains correspondence and press releases regarding a letter to Representative John F. Kennedy from Kohei Hanami, commander of the Amagiri, the Japanese destroyer that collided with Congressman Kennedy’s PT-109 boat during World War II. Also included is a letter to Congressman Kennedy from Patrick H. McMahon, an engineer on the PT-109 who was injured in the collision with the Amagiri.

Photograph of Kohei Hanami, commander of the Amagiri, the Japanese destroyer that collided with Representative John F. Kennedy’s PT-109 boat during World War II. The photograph accompanied a newspaper article about a letter Commander Hanami sent Congressman Kennedy. The caption below reads: "From Kennedy Headquarters, 44 Kilby Street, Boston; For Release Sunday with story; Ed Wagner, Publicity Director, Phone: LAfayette 3-7600; Commander Kohei Hanami, Commander of the Jap Destroyer Amagiri, which rammed Congressman John F. Kennedy's PT boat during an engagement in the Solomons during World War II. Hanami recently wrote Kennedy wishing him luck in his campaign for the United States Senate."
