Kennedy [JFK] and RFK grew increasingly more involved with and concerned about civil rights; getting Martin Luther King out of jail during JFK’s 1960 campaign; civil rights advisers during JFK’s 1960 campaign; RFK becoming Attorney General amidst the civil rights battle and the transitional period in the Department of Justice [DOJ]; how Marshall got his position in the DOJ; the struggle over school desegregation; the New Orleans school crisis of February 1961; the Freedom Riders and violence against them; sending federal marshals to Alabama; trying to find a bus driver to get the Freedom Riders out of Birmingham, Alabama; criticism of RFK’s response to the Freedom Riders; how Freedom Riders were arrested and threatened in Mississippi; African-American voting rights in the South and DOJ authority; difficulties with judges; Supreme Court appointments; the FBI and organized crime; reorganization of the DOJ; RFK’s interactions with the FBI and J. They continue to discuss a press item about a proposed nuclear naval force and Soviet surveillance of naval vessels. Item 8B.2 is a telephone conversation held on March 2, 1963, between President John F. Kennedy and Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs McGeorge Bundy. They discuss reconnaissance flights over Cuba and statements made by Senator Barry M. Goldwater of Arizona. The recording begins in mid-conversation. Item 8B.3 is a sound recording of a telephone conversation held on March 2, 1963, between President John F. Kennedy and Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara. They discuss reconnaissance flights over Cuba and surveillance of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) naval fleet and merchant ships. Item 8B.4 is a telephone conversation held on March 2, 1963, between President John F. Kennedy and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. They discuss the Stennis Committee’s review of the Bay of Pigs Invasion. Item 8B.5 is a telephone conversation held on March 2, 1963, between President John F. Kennedy and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. They discuss the Stennis Committee’s review of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, results of a recent Gallup Poll, and problems for Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller of New York. This folder consists of correspondence between the office of President John F. Kennedy's secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, and individuals and organizations both known and unknown to the President. Materials are mainly expressions of and responses to public opinion. Of note are copies of letters from McGeorge Bundy, National Security Advisor to President Kennedy, to journalist Walter Lippman regarding his recent columns about Senator Barry Goldwater and President Kennedy's trip to Europe.

Carr of San Francisco; Senator Thomas J. McIntyre of New Hampshire; Governor John W. King of New Hampshire; Philip L. Graham of the Washington Post; FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover; President John F. Kennedy; C. Douglas Dillon, Secretary of the Treasury; Charles J. Hitch, Assistant Secretary of Defense; and William McC. Martin, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. There are also numerous White House press releases of remarks by President Johnson; the platform booklet from the 1964 Democratic National Convention; and three items published by the Democratic National Committee: "Some Hard Questions about the Civil Rights Act," "A Goldwater Primer in Five Parts," and "Goldwater Contradictions and Shifts." Note that file contains some draft statements about the General Services Administration that were written by Boutin for other government officials.

Kennedy; a draft essay by Charles C. Killingsworth on how to pay for higher education; Congressional testimony by Edward V. Kiley on financing the federal highway program; a talk by Sioma Kagan on the future international business education; a report by I. M. Labovitz of the Library of Congress Legislative Reference Service on federal renevues and expenditures in states from 1959 to 1961; a speech by Leon T. Kendall on the quality of mortgage credit; a paper by Abba P. Lerner on gold and the balance of payments; an analysis by the New York Clearing House Association on a proposal to increase the maximum insurance on deposits and share accounts; and several articles and speeches by John K. Langum. Note that a bit of "C" correspondence is misfiled here.

Sound recording of a meeting held on August 23, 1963, between President John F. Kennedy and Senator Carl Hayden of Arizona. They discuss the 1964 political campaign, specifically Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona, and water issues in Arizona. After the meeting ends, there is a brief discussion between President Kennedy and a staff member about getting something into a newspaper. Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force General Curtis LeMay is also mentioned.
