Materials in this folder include a telegram, memoranda, a newspaper article, and correspondence between President John F. Kennedy, Assistant Special Counsel to the President Lee C. White, various White House staff members, and individual citizens concerning incidents of discriminatory employment practices, executive orders regarding the President’s Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity, voter registration for Spanish-speaking citizens, efforts by defense contractors and labor organizations to eliminate discriminatory practices, and efforts to recruit members of varied races, religions, and ethnicities for federal employment, with specific emphasis on African Americans. The folder also contains a copy of The American Federalist, the magazine of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), and a statement by Thomas E. Harris, Associate General Counsel of the AFL-CIO, before the General Subcommittee of the House Committee on Education and Labor concerning pending employment legislation.
